An autoimmune condition happens when the immune system mistakes your own tissue for a threat and starts attacking it. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, the most common one, is an autoimmune condition where the immune system targets the thyroid gland, which can slow it down over time.
According to the National Institutes of Health, an estimated 8% of Americans have an autoimmune disease, and women account for most of those cases. Hashimoto’s is the leading cause of hypothyroidism in the United States.
Symptoms reach well beyond fatigue. Hashimoto’s alone can bring on dry skin, hair thinning, joint and muscle aches, sensitivity to cold, constipation, brittle nails, low mood, and trouble with memory or focus.
But a symptom list doesn’t capture what this actually feels like. You’re exhausted no matter how much you sleep. You know something is off, but the tests keep coming back “normal” and you get told it’s just stress.
We see this regularly. Most people don’t walk in knowing they have an autoimmune condition. They come in because they don’t feel like themselves, and we find it in the bloodwork. Others have known about their Hashimoto’s for years but were never told there might be anything they could do beyond medication.
Autoimmune conditions rarely come from one thing. Research points to three pieces that usually line up together, a genetic tendency, some kind of trigger, and a gut that’s become too permeable. Your genes load the gun, but it’s everything else that pulls the trigger. That’s why we don’t just check one number and send you home. We look at what’s driving the immune response in the first place.
What Causes Autoimmune Conditions
So what’s actually causing your immune system to turn on your own body? Research points to three things that usually have to line up together. We call it the autoimmune triad.
Genetic Predisposition
Autoimmune conditions tend to run in families. If your mom, dad, or a sibling has one, your odds go up. That said, our genes don’t decide this on their own. They load the gun. It takes the other two pieces to pull the trigger, which means a family history doesn’t have to be your future.
A Triggering Event
Something usually kicks the process off. It might be a physical or emotional stress, an infection, a hormonal shift like menopause, or an exposure to a toxin in your environment. Sometimes it’s a period of high stress that the body never fully recovered from. This trigger is often what tips a genetic tendency into an active condition.
A Leaky Gut
When the lining of your gut becomes too permeable, food particles, toxins, and bacteria can slip into the bloodstream where they don’t belong. Your body reads them as invaders and mounts an inflammatory response. Over time, that constant inflammation can drive the immune system to start attacking your own tissue. This is why so much of what we do starts with the gut.

Most people have more than one of these in play at once. That’s also why a single lab test and a prescription rarely settle the issue. Before we recommend anything, we look at what’s actually driving the immune response, so we’re working on the cause and not just the symptoms.
How We Help With Autoimmune Conditions
Once we understand what’s driving your immune response, here are the approaches that might help:
- Functional Medicine Testing
Detailed bloodwork that looks at autoimmune and inflammatory markers standard panels often skip, so we can catch problems early and track them over time. - Food Sensitivity Testing
Identifies foods that may be quietly driving inflammation and gut permeability, one of the pieces that can feed an autoimmune response. - Nutrition Changes
Targeted diet adjustments to calm inflammation and take pressure off your immune system. For thyroid conditions like Hashimoto’s, that often means looking at foods like gluten, soy, and nightshades. - Gut Suppport
A plan to heal the gut lining, since a leaky gut is so often part of what’s feeding the immune response. - Targeted Supplement Support
Specific supplements chosen from your lab results, not a one-size-fits-all stack. No two people leave with the same plan. - Chiropractic Care
Support for a nervous system stuck in stress mode, which gives your body a better chance to rest and repair. - Acupuncture
Helps lower stress and calm inflammation as your body works to rebalance. - Virtual Visits
Lab reviews, protocol check-ins, and dietary consultations can all be done remotely, no need to come in for every appointment.
Not sure which of these you need? That’s what your first appointment is for. Most people use a combination, and we’ll figure out where to start together.
What to Expect
Your First Appointment
We spend a full hour going through your health history, your symptoms, when things started, and everything you’ve already tried. You won’t be rushed, and follow-ups aren’t rushed either. From there, we figure out what testing makes sense to start with.
Testing and Results
Depending on what’s going on, we’ll usually run comprehensive bloodwork and food sensitivity testing to see what your immune and inflammatory markers are doing. We review everything together and explain what it means in plain language. If we catch autoimmune markers early, before symptoms take hold, we can often start working on them sooner.
Timeline
We’ll be honest with you here. Some people see their markers start to come down relatively quickly once they put the plan into action. For others, especially when there’s a lot going on, it can take longer. A big part of it is how consistently you’re able to work the plan, the diet, the supplements, the lifestyle pieces. We track your progress and adjust as we go.
What Makes This Different
We’re not here to hand you one prescription and send you off to manage it forever. We work to find what’s driving the immune response and address it at the source, so your body has a real chance to rebalance.
Important to know: We work with patients who are willing to put in the effort. This isn’t a quick fix. It’s about getting to the root cause so you can finally feel like yourself again.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from what my regular doctor offers?
Most conventional appointments run 10 to 15 minutes and follow a standard protocol. If your thyroid numbers land in the normal range, you’re often sent home even if you still feel terrible. We take a full hour for your first visit, run comprehensive testing that looks at autoimmune and inflammatory markers many panels skip, and work to find what’s driving the immune response, not just manage the symptoms.
Q: What autoimmune conditions do you see?
The most common one we see is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. We also see Graves’ disease, another thyroid condition, along with early autoimmune markers that show up in bloodwork before a condition is fully established. Conditions like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis come up less often, but the underlying approach is the same: find what’s driving the immune response and work on it. If you’re not sure whether we can help with your situation, the free consultation is a good place to start.
Is this covered by insurance?
We’re an out-of-network provider, but we can provide a superbill to submit for potential reimbursement. Many patients find they spend less than they would on the copays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket testing that conventional care often adds up to, especially when the tests we run aren’t covered anyway.
Can Hashimoto’s or an autoimmune condition be reversed?
We can’t promise that, and anyone who does isn’t being straight with you. What we can say is that many patients see their markers come down and feel better once we address what’s feeding the immune response. How far you get depends a lot on how consistently you’re able to work the plan.
Do I have to stop my thyroid medication?
No. We don’t take you off anything or tell you to stop what your prescribing doctor has you on. We work alongside your existing care to address the drivers underneath. Any medication changes are a conversation for you and the doctor who prescribed it.
Do you help patients outside of Elkhorn?
Yes. Patients come to us from across the Omaha metro, including West Omaha, Gretna, Papillion, Bennington, Ralston, and La Vista. We also offer virtual visits, which work well for a lot of functional medicine care.
Ready for relief?
You know your body better than anyone. And if you’ve been feeling off, no matter what you’ve been told, it’s worth investigating.
