Low Back Pain Effects 8 out of 10 People
You probably don’t need us to tell you what low back pain is.
But did you know, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), approximately 80% of adults experience low back pain at some point in their lives, making it one of the most common reasons people seek medical care or miss work.
Low back pain can range from a dull, constant ache to sudden, sharp pain and may be acute (lasting days to weeks) or chronic (persisting for 12 weeks or longer).
If You’re Still in Pain, You’re Not Alone
If you’ve been dealing with low back pain that won’t quit—maybe from sitting at a desk all day, lifting something wrong, or waking up stiff every morning—you’re not alone. Many people come to us after trying heating pads, over-the-counter painkillers, and YouTube stretches, only to find the pain keeps coming back.
You might have been told it’s “just part of getting older” or “you need to strengthen your core.” And while those things can help, they don’t explain why the pain started in the first place or why it won’t go away.
Why Your Back Pain Keeps Coming Back
Here’s what we’ve found: low back pain usually isn’t just one thing.
- Your spine might not be moving the way it should.
- Your muscles might be compensating for something else.
- Or there could be a disc issue no one’s caught yet.
- That’s why we don’t just adjust your back and send you on your way—we figure out what’s actually going on first.
What’s Really Causing Your Low Back Pain?
Low back pain rarely has just one cause. What you’re feeling is usually your body’s way of telling you that something isn’t working the way it should—and more often than not, it’s a combination of things.
When Your Spine Gets Stuck
Spinal joint dysfunction – When the vertebrae in your low back aren’t moving properly, the surrounding muscles tighten up to protect the area. Over time, this creates a cycle: the joints stay stuck, the muscles stay tight, and the pain sticks around.
The Sitting Problem
Muscle imbalances and compensation patterns – Sitting for hours every day tightens your hip flexors (especially the psoas muscle, which attaches to your low back). When those muscles stay tight, they pull on your spine. Your glutes and core try to compensate, but eventually, something gives out—and that’s when the pain shows up.
When Discs Bulge or Herniate
Disc bulges or herniations – The discs between your vertebrae act like shock absorbers. When they bulge or herniate (often from improper lifting or repetitive strain), they can press on nerves and cause sharp, shooting pain. Sometimes you’ll hear a “pop” when it happens. Sometimes you won’t.
The Deep Muscle No One Talks About
Piriformis muscle tightness – The piriformis is a deep glute muscle that the sciatic nerve runs through in most people. When it gets tight or angry (from sitting too much, lifting wrong, or overdoing it at the gym), it can cause pain that radiates down your leg—even if your low back itself doesn’t hurt that much.
Arthritis Doesn’t Mean You’re Stuck with Pain
Arthritis and degenerative changes – As we age, the joints in the spine can develop arthritis. This is more common in people who sit all day or have a history of injuries. Arthritis doesn’t mean you’re doomed to pain forever, but it does mean we need to address how your spine is moving and what’s putting extra stress on those joints.
The Inflammation Connection
Inflammation and nutritional factors – Sometimes low back pain won’t fully resolve because there’s underlying inflammation your body is struggling with. Poor gut health, food sensitivities, or nutrient deficiencies can all contribute to chronic inflammation that shows up as pain.
How We Help You Get Relief
Once we understand what’s causing your low back pain, here are the treatments that might help:
Flexion Distraction
This is most patients’ favorite part. Our specialized table gently moves your lower back in ways you can’t do yourself, stretching tight muscles and opening up the spaces between vertebrae. It’s especially helpful for disc bulges or herniations because it allows nutrients to flow into the disc space and can actually help pull a bulged disc back into place. What’s flexion distraction?
Chiropractic Adjustments
We get your spine moving the way it should. Depending on what your body needs and what you’re comfortable with, we use either the drop table technique or side posture adjustments to restore proper movement to stuck joints in your low back. Learn more about our approach to chiropractic care.
Deep Muscle Work
We release the muscles that are pulling on your spine—including the piriformis (the deep glute muscle that can cause leg pain) and the psoas (your hip flexor that attaches directly to your low back). When these muscles relax, your spine can finally move freely again.
Shockwave Therapy
This treatment uses acoustic waves to break up scar tissue and trigger your body’s healing response. It’s particularly effective for chronic low back pain that hasn’t responded to other treatments, and for patients who need deeper tissue work. Learn more about Shockwave Therapy.
Cold Laser Therapy
Cold laser stimulates cellular healing and reduces inflammation without any discomfort. We often recommend this for patients with chronic inflammation or those who are more sensitive to manual treatments. Learn more about Cold Laser Therapy.
Acupuncture
Strategic needle placement helps reduce pain and inflammation while promoting your body’s natural healing. Many patients find this especially helpful when combined with chiropractic care. Learn more about our acupuncture services.
Functional Medicine Testing
When low back pain won’t fully resolve, there’s often underlying inflammation at play. We can run comprehensive labs to check for food sensitivities, nutrient deficiencies, or gut health issues that keep the pain cycle going. Learn more about functional medicine.
Not One-Size-Fits-All
Most patients need a combination of these treatments. We start with what makes the most sense for your situation, then adjust as we go based on what’s working.
What to Expect
Your First Appointment (A Full Hour)
We spend the full hour talking through your health history, when the pain started, what makes it better or worse, and what you’ve already tried. Then we do a thorough chiropractic exam to figure out what’s actually going on with your spine and muscles.
Most patients get adjusted at that first appointment. We’ll walk you through everything before we do it—especially if you’ve never been to a chiropractor before.
Your Treatment Plan
At the end of your first visit, we’ll give you our recommendations. You’re in control—you can do part of the plan or all of it. Our job is to tell you what we think will get you feeling better as quickly as possible, but you decide what makes sense for where you’re at right now.
How Often You’ll Come In
Most people start coming in more frequently—maybe twice a week for the first few weeks—then we taper down to once a week, then every other week as you improve. At 8 weeks, we do a re-exam to see how much progress you’ve made. If things are going well, we keep doing what’s working. If not, we change the plan.
When You’ll Feel Better
Some people notice a difference after the first few visits. Others take a few weeks, especially if your pain has been around for months or years. If you have a disc issue or chronic inflammation, it might take a few months to fully resolve.
Here’s what we know: if you’re not seeing any improvement after 8 weeks, we need to try something different—whether that’s adding another treatment, getting imaging done, or referring you to someone else who can help.
What Makes This Different
Unlike conventional medicine where you get a prescription and a “good luck,” we’re tracking your progress at every appointment. If something’s not working, we adjust. You’re not stuck on a plan that isn’t helping.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from what my regular doctor offers?
Most doctors have 10-15 minutes per appointment and will prescribe muscle relaxers or refer you to physical therapy. We take a full hour for your first visit, figure out what’s actually causing the pain (not just where it hurts), and use hands-on treatment to get your spine and muscles moving properly again.
Do you take insurance?
We’re an out-of-network provider, so not directly. Upon request, we’ll provide superbills that you can submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. Many patients find they save money compared to copays, deductibles, and the cost of treatments insurance won’t cover anyway.
How long until I feel better?
Some people notice relief after a few visits. Others take a few weeks, especially if the pain has been chronic. If we’re dealing with a disc issue or long-term inflammation, it might take a few months. We track your progress every visit and adjust the plan if something’s not working.
Do I need to do chiropractic AND functional medicine?
No. We start with what makes the most sense for your situation. Most low back pain responds well to chiropractic care and soft tissue work alone. If your pain isn’t improving after 8 weeks, that’s when we might look deeper with functional medicine testing to see if inflammation is keeping you stuck.
Will I need to keep coming forever?
No. The goal is to get you better, then taper you off. Most patients start coming more frequently, then we reduce visits as you improve. Some people choose to come once a month for maintenance after they’re feeling better, but that’s up to you.
