If you’ve been told your headaches are “just stress” or handed another prescription without anyone investigating why they keep coming back, you’re not alone.

Most conventional approaches treat headaches like a nuisance to manage—not a symptom worth investigating. Take this medication when it happens. Try this preventative. See if it helps. But no one’s asking the more important question: What’s actually causing them?

Here’s the truth: Your headaches aren’t random. They’re your body’s alarm system telling you something’s wrong. Maybe it’s been going off for months. Maybe years. Either way, it deserves more than a Band-Aid.

We approach headaches and migraines differently. Instead of just covering up the pain, we investigate what’s triggering it—then we treat that. For some patients, it’s spinal misalignment. For others, it’s nutritional deficiencies, hormone imbalances, or chronic stress that conventional doctors never checked for.

Below, we’ll walk you through what commonly causes headaches and migraines, which treatments might help, and what you can expect when working with us.

What Causes Headaches & Migraines?

So what’s actually causing your headaches? Here’s what we typically find:

Spinal Misalignment & Nerve Pressure

When vertebrae in your upper neck (especially C1 and C2) aren’t moving the way they should, they can put pressure on nerves and restrict blood flow to your head. This is one of the most common causes of tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches (headaches that start in the neck).

Muscle Tension in the Neck & Shoulders

Tight muscles in your scalenes, suboccipital muscles (base of your skull), traps, and shoulders pull on your head and neck. This tension restricts movement, reduces circulation, and creates the dull, constant ache many people describe as a “tight band” around their head. Hours at a desk, poor posture, and stress all contribute to this pattern.

Dehydration & Electrolyte Imbalances

Your brain is 75% water. When you’re dehydrated or low on key electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium), your brain tissue can temporarily shrink, pulling away from the skull and triggering pain receptors. Many patients find their headaches improve significantly just by drinking more water and using quality electrolytes (not sugar-filled sports drinks).

Nutritional Deficiencies

Magnesium, B vitamins (especially B2 and B12), and CoQ10 are essential for healthy nerve function and blood vessel regulation. Deficiencies in these nutrients are strongly linked to migraines, particularly magnesium; yet standard labs often miss sub clinical deficiencies that still cause significant symptoms.

Hormone Imbalances

Fluctuating estrogen levels—whether from your menstrual cycle, perimenopause, or thyroid dysfunction—can trigger migraines. Many women notice their migraines worsen around their period or during hormonal transitions. Addressing the underlying hormone imbalance often reduces migraine frequency dramatically.

Chronic Stress & Nervous System Dysregulation

When you’re stuck in “fight or flight” mode, your muscles stay tight, your blood vessels constrict, and inflammation increases throughout your body. Over time, this chronic stress state makes you more susceptible to headaches and migraines. Your nervous system needs help shifting back into “rest and repair” mode.

How We Treat Headaches & Migraines

We use a combination of approaches based on what we find during your first appointment:

Chiropractic Adjustments: We adjust the joints in your neck (especially C1 and C2) that aren’t moving properly to take pressure off nerves and restore normal motion. This is different from cracking your own neck—you’re moving the stuff that’s already moving too much, while we target the restricted joints that need attention.

Soft Tissue Work: We release tight muscles in your neck, shoulders, and base of your skull (scalenes, suboccipitals, traps) before adjusting. This helps the adjustments hold longer and addresses one of the major contributors to tension headaches.

Functional Medicine Testing: Comprehensive labs that check magnesium, B vitamins, hormone levels, and inflammatory markers to identify nutritional or hormonal triggers conventional doctors often miss.

Acupuncture: Especially helpful for stress-related headaches and migraines. Acupuncture helps regulate your nervous system, reduce inflammation, and shift your body out of chronic “fight or flight” mode.

Targeted Supplementation: Based on your lab results, we may recommend specific supplements like magnesium, B2, CoQ10, or balanced electrolytes to address underlying deficiencies.

Lifestyle Guidance: We’ll talk through hydration, nutrition, stress management, and posture habits that could be contributing to your headaches.

Not sure which treatment you need? We’ll figure that out during your first appointment. Most patients benefit from a combination of these approaches—especially chiropractic care and muscle work, with functional medicine testing or acupuncture added as needed.

What to Expect

Your First Appointment (Full Hour)

We take a full hour to talk through your history—how often you get headaches, what triggers them, what treatments you’ve already tried, and what else is going on with your health. Then we’ll do a physical exam to check your neck mobility, muscle tension, and spinal alignment.

If it makes sense, we’ll do some initial treatment that day (adjustments, muscle work, or acupuncture). We’ll also discuss whether functional medicine testing would help identify triggers like nutritional deficiencies or hormone imbalances.

Treatment Timeline

Some patients notice improvement after the first adjustment, especially if muscle tension and spinal misalignment are the main triggers. But most people see gradual improvement over 4-6 weeks of consistent care.

If there are nutritional deficiencies or hormone imbalances contributing to your headaches, it may take 8-12 weeks to see full results once we address those underlying issues.

Frequency of Visits

Initially, we typically recommend coming in 1-2 times per week for the first few weeks. As your symptoms improve, we’ll space out visits. Many patients eventually shift to once-a-month maintenance care to keep headaches from coming back.

What We’re Working Toward

The goal isn’t just to get rid of your current headache, it’s to reduce how often you get them and how intense they are when they do show up. We want you to go from weekly migraines to occasional mild headaches, or from daily tension headaches to none at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can chiropractic care really help with migraines?
Yes. Research shows that chiropractic adjustments can reduce migraine frequency and intensity, especially for cervicogenic migraines (migraines that originate in the neck). Many patients see significant improvement when we combine adjustments with muscle work and address nutritional triggers.

How is this different from just taking pain medication?
Pain medication covers up the symptom without fixing what’s causing it. We’re looking for the root cause and treating that. The goal is to reduce how often you get headaches in the first place, not just mask them when they show up.

Will you crack my neck?
Only if you’re comfortable with manual adjustments. There are other techniques we can use if you prefer a gentler approach. We always meet you where you’re at.

I’ve had headaches for years. Can you still help?
Yes. Even if you’ve had chronic headaches or migraines for decades, your body can still heal when we address the underlying causes. It may take longer than someone with recent-onset headaches, but most patients see meaningful improvement.

Do I need to do functional medicine testing?
Not necessarily. Many people get great results from chiropractic care and muscle work alone. But if you’re not improving as much as we’d expect, or if your headaches seem tied to your menstrual cycle, energy crashes, or digestive issues, testing can help us identify hormone imbalances or nutritional deficiencies that are contributing.

How long before I see results?
Some patients notice relief after the first visit, especially if tight muscles and spinal misalignment are the main issues. Most people see gradual improvement over 4-6 weeks. If there are nutritional or hormonal triggers, it may take 8-12 weeks to see full results.

Will my insurance cover this?
We’re an out-of-network provider, which means you’ll pay out-of-pocket at the time of service. Upon request, we can provide superbills for potential insurance reimbursement. Many patients find they save money compared to conventional care (multiple copays, expensive imaging, ongoing prescriptions) and get better results because we can run the tests you actually need—not just what insurance decides to cover.
