What Is Neck Pain (And What’s Causing More of It)?

Neck pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints in the United States, affecting 1 in 3 adults each year. It refers to pain, stiffness, or reduced range of motion in the cervical spine — the seven vertebrae that run from the base of your skull to your upper back. In recent years, a specific pattern has become more common: “tech neck,” the strain that builds up from hours of looking down at phones, tablets, and computer screens.

It’s More Than Just Stiffness

But that definition doesn’t capture what it actually feels like. The stiffness when you wake up and can’t turn your head to check your blind spot. The headaches that start at the base of your skull and work their way up. The tingling in your fingers that comes and goes. Or the neck you crack throughout the day; and no matter how many times you do it, it never feels better for long.

You’ve Probably Already Tried the Usual Advice

We see neck pain patients regularly. A lot of them have already been told to stretch, take ibuprofen, or put heat on it. Some have done physical therapy without lasting results. Some have been cracking their own neck for years without realizing it may be making things worse over time. If you’ve been managing your neck pain without ever really getting to the bottom of it, you’re not alone.

The Cause Matters as Much as the the Symptoms

Here’s what we’ve found: neck pain is rarely just tight muscles. It’s usually a mix of how your spine is moving, whether your cervical curve is where it should be, and what’s happening with the nerves and joints in that area. The cause matters — because a muscle spasm from sleeping funny clears up differently than arthritic changes that have been building for years. That’s why we start with a thorough exam to figure out what’s actually going on before we do anything else.

What’s Actually Causing Your Neck Pain?

Posture and Tech Neck

The average adult spends hours each day looking down at a phone or screen. For every inch your head tilts forward, the effective weight your neck has to support increases significantly. Over time, that constant strain adds up; and for a lot of people, it’s the primary driver of their pain.

A Cervical Curve That’s Shifted

Your neck is supposed to have a natural curve. That curve acts as a shock absorber and helps your spine support the weight of your head. When you spend years looking down, that curve can start to straighten out. A straighter neck means more compressive force on the joints and discs — and more pain over time.

Muscle Spasm

Sometimes you wake up and simply can’t turn your head. That’s torticollis — a muscle spasm that locks the neck up, often from sleeping in an awkward position or turning too fast. It can also come from dehydration or an electrolyte imbalance, which most people never consider.

Joints That Aren’t Moving Correctly

When some joints in your neck stop moving the way they should, neighboring joints pick up the slack and start moving too much. If you’re someone who cracks their own neck throughout the day, that’s usually what’s happening — you’re moving the joints that are already too mobile, while the stuck ones stay stuck. Over time, that pattern can accelerate arthritic changes.

Arthritis and Degeneration

Arthritic changes in the cervical spine are more common than most people realize, and they’re not just an age thing. Past injuries, sports, car accidents, and years of poor posture all play a role. When the joints degenerate, it can narrow the space available for nerves, leading to pain, stiffness, and other symptoms that seem unrelated to the neck.

Old Injuries You May Have Forgotten About

Whiplash doesn’t always cause immediate problems. Sometimes the effects show up years — even decades — later as chronic stiffness, headaches, or degeneration in the affected area. If you were rear-ended at any point and never got it looked at, it may still be relevant.

Nerve Involvement

When the lower part of the neck is involved, symptoms don’t always stay in the neck. Depending on which nerves are affected, you might feel numbness, tingling, or weakness in your arm, hand, or fingers — sometimes just in a couple of fingers, not the whole arm. Upper cervical problems tend to show up differently: headaches, dizziness, and migraines are all commonly connected to what’s happening in the neck.

Most people have more than one of these things going on at once. That’s why we do a thorough exam before assuming anything — so we’re treating what’s actually there, not just what seems most likely.

How We Treat Neck Pain

Once we understand what’s driving your pain, here are the treatments we might use:

Chiropractic Adjustments

We move the joints that aren’t moving, not the ones that are already too mobile. That’s a key distinction from cracking your own neck. Adjustments help restore normal motion, reduce pressure on the surrounding nerves, and let your body start healing the way it’s meant to.

At-Home Exercises

Most neck pain patients get exercises to work on between appointments. Restoring your cervical curve takes consistent effort — adjustments move things in the right direction, but what you do at home between visits matters too.

Cold Laser Therapy

For muscle spasm and inflammation, cold laser can speed up tissue healing and provide relief without any discomfort during treatment.

Shockwave / Pressure Wave Therapy

For stubborn knots or chronic muscle tension in the neck and upper traps, shockwave can help break things up when softer approaches aren’t cutting it.

Acupuncture

Helps reduce muscle tension, calm the nervous system, and address stress-related contributors to neck pain — particularly useful when tight traps and shoulder muscles are part of the picture.

Nutritional Support

If muscle spasm or headaches are involved, we’ll often look at hydration and electrolyte balance. It’s a simple thing that gets overlooked constantly, and sometimes it makes a meaningful difference.

Not sure where to start? We’ll figure that out at your first appointment. Most patients end up using a combination of these, and the mix shifts as you progress.

What to Expect

Your First Appointment (60 minutes)

We spend a full hour going through your health history, your symptoms, and what you’ve already tried. Before we do anything, we run orthopedic tests to make sure it’s safe to adjust and to figure out exactly where the problem is coming from. It’s rare that we don’t address things at that first appointment, but we do the exam first, every time.

How quickly will you feel better?

It depends on what’s causing it. A muscle spasm from sleeping wrong can clear up in a visit or two, sometimes one. Postural issues and cervical curve problems take longer, because we’re working against years of accumulated strain. If arthritis or nerve involvement is part of the picture, that’s a longer road — but most patients notice meaningful improvement well before we’ve resolved everything. We’ll give you an honest read on your situation after the exam.

What We’re Working Toward

The goal isn’t just less pain, it’s a neck that’s actually moving correctly so it doesn’t keep breaking down. That means restoring proper joint movement, working on your curve if it’s shifted, and giving you the tools to maintain it at home. For some patients that’s a few weeks of care. For others it’s an ongoing maintenance relationship, especially if degeneration is involved.

What Makes This Different

Most people with neck pain get told to stretch and come back if it gets worse. We take the time to figure out what’s actually wrong. And we’re straightforward with you about what we find, what it’ll take, and whether we’re the right fit for your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is neck pain something a chiropractor can actually fix, or just manage?
It depends on the cause. Muscle spasm and postural issues often resolve fully with the right care and some work at home. Arthritic changes and degeneration can’t be reversed, but we can get the joints moving better, reduce pressure on the nerves, and slow things down significantly. We’ll tell you honestly what we think is achievable after your first exam.

I’ve been cracking my own neck for years. Is that making things worse?
It can be. When you crack your own neck, you’re typically moving the joints that are already too mobile — not the ones that are stuck. Over time, that hypermobility can actually accelerate arthritic changes as your body tries to stabilize those joints. The goal of an adjustment is the opposite: moving what isn’t moving so everything shares the load correctly.

Can neck pain cause headaches, arm tingling, or dizziness?
Yes, all three. Upper cervical problems commonly contribute to headaches, migraines, and dizziness. Lower cervical issues can cause numbness, tingling, or weakness that runs down the arm into the hand or fingers. If you have neck pain alongside any of these, it’s worth getting the whole picture evaluated together.

Do I need to commit to a long treatment plan upfront?
No. We don’t ask for large deposits or lock you into a set number of visits before we’ve even examined you. We start with your first appointment, tell you what we find, and go from there.

Do you take insurance?
We’re an out-of-network provider, which means we’re not limited by insurance restrictions on testing or treatment length. Many patients save money compared to conventional care once you factor in copays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket costs. We provide superbills you can submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement.
